Abstract

Vine growing occupies the number one spot in the world in terms of surface area covered for woody fruit species and has a huge impact, from both an economic and social perspective. It has been calculated that there are around eight million hectares of vineyards with as many as 15,000 varieties of vine, although only a small number of these varieties occupy large expanses. In Spain, there are over one million hectares of vineyards, approximately 60% of which corresponds to four of the varieties included in the Commercial Vine Variety Registry: Airén, Tempranillo, Red Grenache and Bobal.
