La atención centrada en la persona. Algunas claves para avanzar en los servicios gerontológicos

Abstract

The aim of this paper is twofold: (1) to present the Person Centred Care approach (PPC) from the perspective of how it can be applied to the gerontology resources and (2) to provide a few hints on how to facilitate its development. First, this paper lists the guidelines that lead the application of the PPC approach to the elderly in a frail and/or dependant situation. Secondly, the paper reviews the origin of this approach, as well as its main contributions and the initiatives that have been carried out both in Spain and internationally. Thirdly, it deals with the factors that can facilitate the implementation of the PPC approach into the services and proposes a number of phases that can bring progress in the implementation process. Then, it analyses the extent to which the PPC approach has been developed in the Spanish gerontology services where, in the last few years, there has been an increasing interest in this approach. Lastly, this paper points out some of the current challenges and risks but also the benefits that this approach brings.
