Cuidados del catéter urinario basados en la evidencia científica en Atención Primaria.

Abstract

Introduction The control and prevention of complications related to urinary catheters is a recurring theme throughout the world. However, the results of different studies show high rates of complications in patients with urinary catheters at home. It follows from this that nurses practices and patient education is still poor. For this reason, we propose a literature review of the current literature on urinary catheter care in primary care. Description The first contact of a patient with an urinary catheter out of the hospital is going to be with his primary care nurse. The refore, the need to ensure continuity of care, takes primary care nurses to educate urethral catheter patients, or their dependents, into the main ideas of aseptic, personal hygiene and general operation of the catheter, to minimize complications of the urinary tract. In our daily experience, we found that primary care nurses do not have a care standardization for the maintenance of urinary catheter. Conclusions The nurse plays a very important role in the management and education of the patient with an urinary catheter in primary care. For this reason, the nurse must have the knowledge and skills based on best practices to reduce potential complications.
