| Resumen : | Introduction: Primary Health Care has a key role in primary and secondary prevention of cervical cancer. The objectives we set to conduct a literature review of cervical cancer and its prevention and describe the technique of liquid-based cytology as an alternative to conventional cytology in primary care. Description: cervical cancer is the second most common type in women, being necessary cause for its genesis but not enough HPV infection (human papillomavirus). The education and health promotion as well as secondary prevention through routine screenings are critical to reduce its incidence. Liquid-based cytology is a variant of the cervico-vaginal cytology or Pap traditional, allowing, among other advantages, make the same decision in the molecular test for HPV. Conclusions: Cervical cancer is the main cause persistent infection with HPV, with the key primary prevention and transmission control. Liquid-based cytology is an effective alternative to conventional cytology, requiring preparation and training for which primary care professionals, and particularly nurses, are trained. |
