Resumen : Society acquires a cultural model during a particular historical period through what we call canon. Canon is a selection of certain fragments of the cultural heritage of a community such as works, authors, lifestyles, expression forms, ethics, etc., to form its historical heritage and conserve it by transmitting it to society. Educational institutions assume the role of transmission, mainly through texts and books of education, thus becoming a decisive element for the consolidation of the cultural system. Educational books are the main source of information for Spanish students. Main Spanish publishers are responsible for selecting some music content at the expense of others. Therefore, textbooks become the final expression of the prevailing ideology around music, assuming the implementation of a musical canon. The target of this research is the study of the musical canon proposed by textbooks of the subject Music in the Spanish Secondary Education since 1990. The contents of textbooks have been analysed according to parameters based on the characteristics of canon -repertoire, music types, authors, gender issues, etc.- as well as the structure of the textbooks. Hence, we aim to understand the role that books develop in the transmission of the canon, and finding out what cultural model is proposed.
