dc.description.abstractThe Herpesviridae includes atleasteightviralspeciespathogenicforhumans,responsibleforawidevarietyof clinicalsymptoms.Thelackofaneffectivevaccineandthemoderatetohightoxicityoftheavailablesyntheticanti- herpescompoundsemphasisestheneedfornewinhibitors.Several Phyllanthus genus (Euphorbiaceae) membershave been widelyusedintraditionalmedicineandtheirbiologicalpropertieshavebeenintenselystudied.Inthisstudywe investigatedthe in vitro antiviral activityoftheCuban-endemicplant Phyllanthusorbicularis H.B.K. against Herpes simplexvirus type 1(HSV-1)and2(HSV-2)referencestrainsandclinicalisolateswithdifferentsensitivitiesto acyclovir.Theinhibitoryactivityon Humancytomegalovirus (HCMV)replicationwasalsoinvestigated.Theselectivity indexes (SI)foundfor Ph. orbicularis aqueousextractrangedfrom8.7to37.6.Studiesontheantiviralmechanisms involvedrevealedthatthedrugactedatearlystagesofherpesvirusreplication,possiblybyproducingavirucidaleffect,althoughfurtherinhibitionofintracellularreplicationeventscouldnotberuledout.eng
