| Resumen : | Nowadays there is great variability among health professionals in relation with the treatment and attention of this topic, even though there is abundant literature concerning this subject. Through this literature review I try to collect updated information and build consensus regarding the treatment of these ulcers with compression therapy. Development Venous ulcers in lower extremities, the final product of chronic venous insufficiency, are a major cause of consultation in Primary Care Centers. The compression therapy is the most effective treatment of these ulcers, as it affects on venous hypertension, reduces edema and increases venous return. Such compression is achieved by using a bandage or an appropriate media for this purpose, which produces a gradual and sustained external pressure on the affected limb. Before applying pressure we must make an assessment of the patient's leg and the wound, measuring up the presence of a possible concomitant artery disease by calculating the ankle-brachial index (ABI). It is also important to be aware of the possible side effects of compression bandage in order to take appropriate measures to reduce risks and act quickly in the event of problems arising. Conclusions The compression bandage provides a safe and effective treatment for patients with venous ulcers. When compression therapies are combined with a program of prevention of recurrence, health status of patients is improved and the burden of this disease on Healthcare systems is reduced. |
