Resumen : Introduction. Smoking is a chronic, recurrent, treatable and addictive nature disease that constitutes the main preventable cause of disease, disability and premature death in developed countries. Main objective. Evaluate the effectiveness of an intensive intervention on smoking cessation carried out by a nursing professional at the health center in Tapia de Casariego. Method. Type of study. Descriptive retrospective case study. Scope of study. Health center of Tapia de Casariego, semirural character, within the Sanitary Area I (Principado de Asturias). Period of study. Between 2004 and 2012 inclusive. Study population. Smoking patients from the health center of Tapia de Casariego who were at preparation stage (inclusion criteria) and demanded help to cese smoking. Variables to study. Sociodemographic characteristics, personal history (risk factors or prior illness) related to tobacco and smoking characteristics. Measuring instrument. The main outcome measure or the effectiveness of the program was maintained and self-declared abstinence from smoking a period not shorter than 12 months after having abandoned the consumption of tobacco. Results. The effectiveness of the intervention, considered as the abstinence rate at 12 months, was 45.1 %. Conclusions. Educational interventions on intensive smoking cessation carried out in primary care are very effective, contributing significantly to the reduction of smoking if carried out on smokers motivated to stop smoking.
