| Resumen : | Objective To estimate the prevalence of energy drink consumption among university students. Identify the sociodemographic and academic variables associated with a higher intake of energy drinks. Method Descriptive observational study conducted at the University of Oviedo in students pursuing a career related to the Health Sciences (Nursing, Physiotherapy, Medicine, Dentistry and Psychology). The necessary information was collected anonymously through a questionnaire that was enabled in the Virtual Campus and collected information on the consumption of energy drinks and other variables that could influence the consumption. Results 19.0% (n = 65) of students consumed some amount of energy drinks weekly. Among consumers, the mean milliliters consumed per week was 909.1 (IC95: 589.0 to 1228.7). The energy drink consumption was higher among men, especially if they work. In addition, although the differences were not statistically significant, Physiotherapy and Psychology students, which take less time to reach the faculty, that spent less hours a week to study and more to physical activity have a higher intake. Conclusion The prevalence of consumption of energy drinks is generally lower than expected for the young adult population. Perhaps because of this lower prevalence, although some features are associated with consumption, it has not been able to clearly identify student profile consumer. It is necessary to continue investigating some open as a result of this research, especially about the consequences of consumption on academic and health indicators in young people. |
